Easy DIY Balloon Arch for Space-Themed Birthday

Ever since I made my first balloon arch for my daughter’s birthday, I’ve been finding ways to incorporate them into parties because they are SO EASY. Not lying. Really. It looks more complicated than it is. If you can sew some thread through the end of a balloon, you can make yourself a balloon arch.

Now, I said it would be easy, but you will need a few tools to make the process absolutely painless.

Ballon Arch Materials Nedded

Electric Balloon Pump – This is a MUST HAVE.  Don’t even think about doing this without an electric balloon pump.  For serious.  Other bloggers will try to tell you to use a hand pump like this one.  Don’t listen to them. Lol. You’ll be pumping up hundreds of balloons.

EZ Tie – Balloon Tying Tool – Another MUST HAVE. Trust me. This is the best invention.  Like, ever.  It allows you to tie balloons so quickly without hurting your fingers.  Once I got the hang of it, I was pumping and tying a balloon in seconds! You slip it on your fingers and wrap the balloon end around and through the space. You’ll get the hang of it.   Buy it.  Don’t even hesitate.  You can thank me later.

Balloons– the key is to buy balloons in different sizes! I used 5″ and 11″.   The mini balloons make all the texture in these arches. Dollar store balloons will work, but they won’t last. So, if you want to make this ahead of time (I made this a week before the party), use good quality balloons. They’re more expensive but there is definitely a difference in quality.

Fishing line – Any clear fishing line will do!

Plastic Sewing Needles – You’ll use these to ‘sew’ the balloon tails together with the fishing line.

Hooks: You’ll need to think of a way to attach your arch.  3M removable hooks are my friends.

How To:

To create this space-themed balloon arch for my son’s birthday party, I purchased orange and grey balloons, silver stars, and a Meri Meri rocket balloon.

Step 1:

Blow up your balloons with an Electric Balloon Pump

Step 2:

Use fishing line and plastic sewing needles to sew the balloon tails together to create a long string of balloons.

It will look like this!

Step 3:

When you have a long enough strand to fit your space, you can begin to attach it using 3M Hooks.

These hooks are great for the ends because you can easily tie the fishing line to them.
These hooks are great for the middle or anyplace you want to create a ‘swoop’

Final Step:

Use your low-temperature glue gun to attach smaller balloons and mylar stars to create more depth and dimension.

You can also use them outside with larger balloons. I used a larger mylar moon balloon as well as 36″ grey balloons here.
